Accreditation Body

Joint Commission International (JCI)

Joint Commission International (JCI) is the internationally recognized gold standard for hospital accreditation — the most important quality signal in medical tourism.

What JCI Is

JCI is the international division of The Joint Commission, the largest healthcare accreditor in the United States. Founded in 1994 and headquartered in Illinois, JCI has accredited and certified more than 1,000 health organizations across 80+ countries.

When a hospital displays the JCI “Gold Seal of Approval,” it means the facility has passed a rigorous onsite survey conducted by JCI-certified surveyors — doctors, nurses, administrators, and other healthcare professionals who assess standards compliance across patient safety, care quality, infection control, and operational systems.

Why It Matters for Medical Tourists

For Americans and Canadians considering care abroad, JCI accreditation is the single most reliable indicator that a foreign hospital operates at standards comparable to US facilities. The World Health Organization collaborates with JCI on the WHO Collaborating Centre initiative dedicated to patient safety.

The American Medical Association (AMA) guidelines specifically reference JCI-accredited facilities when addressing care abroad. This is the standard that matters.

How to Verify

JCI maintains a public searchable directory of all accredited organizations at jointcommissioninternational.org. Before booking any procedure abroad, verify the facility’s current accreditation status in this directory. Accreditation can lapse, so check the date.

Accreditation Programs

JCI accredits six types of organizations:

Current Accreditation Standards

JCI currently uses its 8th edition standards for hospitals, with the new Continuous Engagement model piloted globally in 2024–2025.

Who Oversees JCI

JCI itself is accredited by the International Society for Quality in Health Care External Evaluation Association (IEEA), providing third-party validation that JCI’s own processes meet international benchmarks.
